Today however, was different. I left Memorial High School after substitute teaching all day for gym class and I had some time to kill before my economics graduate class at 6:00 PM. I decided I would go for a quick 5k so that I would have time to get home, shower, and get to school with plenty of time to spare.
I threw on some shorts as it wasn't too bad out while I was outside at school, a long sleeve UnderArmor, and my New Balance X Welded Reach The Beach 1/2 zip running jacket and ran out the back door. That should be enough clothes for January 6th right?
It was now 4:15 PM and the sun was beginning to lower and lower into the sky. I could feel the temperature dropping every minute the sun set. I quickly realized that shorts may of not been the best idea. But hey, we live and we learn. (There were certainly no holiday chestnuts roasting today. More like flash freezing.)
I decided to do my typical 5K look around the Derryfield Country Club which has an elevation profile of +592.9 feet / -557.7 feet / net: 36.3 feet. Needless to say, it is not the flattest or easiest 5K to run but I enjoy it for training runs and today was a good day to push a little harder.
I say that for multiple reasons. First, it was cold so the harder I worked, the warmer I became. Second, I was wearing shorts, so the harder I worked, the warmer I became. Third, it's January so the harder I worked, the warmer I became. Forth, well you get the idea.
I managed to run an average minute per mile pace of 7:15's (22:29) which was very good for me considering I am still catching up on the slacking I was doing from the end of 2010. Plus it's a training run, who ever works hard on a training run? Right? (I do, well try to anyway, for those who are wondering . . .)
Either way, I pushed it home and it felt great to get the run out of the way before class tonight. Now I just have to survive graduate level economics and I will be home free!
(This should be fun!)
